PITTSBURGH, Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- ImPACT Applications, Inc., developer of FDA-cleared ImPACT® and ImPACT Pediatric®, announced today it has been approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor Continuing Education (CE) courses on concussion management for psychologists. ImPACT Applications is the first and only neurocognitive testing and concussion management software company to offer APA-approved CE credits for concussion management, validating the company's proven, scientific approach and supporting the need for empirical data in concussion protocols.

"Our Training and Education department has grown substantially, training more than 15,000 health care providers and offering significant resources to participants to promote increased knowledge and competence using ImPACT Applications' products in concussion management," said Michael Wahlster, chief executive officer of ImPACT Applications. "At ImPACT Applications, we focus on innovation and research, and we hope other professional associations will follow the APA's lead."

ImPACT Applications Training and Education offers online and in-person CE courses on topics that include developing a concussion policy, concussion treatment & clinical trajectories, return to activity guidelines, and more. Psychologists who enroll in ImPACT's Credentialed ImPACT Consultant (CIC) program can now receive CE credits when they complete these courses, which aim to improve patient outcomes through the use of ImPACT Applications' products in concussion management protocols. Participating psychologists can gain concussion management knowledge that is not typically a part of doctoral psychology training.

"It is essential for psychologists to have a specialized understanding of concussion evaluation and management protocols, especially since there is no clear standard for diagnosing concussion," said Robert J. McCaffrey, Ph.D. ABN, ABPdN, of Albany Neuropsychological Associates. "This new partnership between APA and ImPACT Applications provides psychologists the resources and the opportunity to gain this knowledge, which will ultimately benefit their patients."

ImPACT Applications' Training and Education department has offered CE courses for Athletic Trainers since 2005. Additionally, CE courses have been added to the curriculum and health care provider programs have been developed for Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses.  Comprehensive concussion management requires a multidisciplinary team of professionals, and offering CE courses is one way ImPACT Applications works to improve overall concussion management.

"At ImPACT Applications, we create training programs and courses for all of our health care providers who work within the multidisciplinary team," added Chief Training & Education Officer Labiba Russo, who has been with ImPACT Applications since the company's inception. "This ensures continuity of care within the teams that manage concussion evaluation and research."
