American Legacy Foundation(R) Welcomes New Board Member

WASHINGTON, Aug. 21 The American LegacyFoundation(R) welcomes Wyoming State Senator Charles Scott, R-Casper, to itsboard of directors. Scott first served as a member of the Wyoming House ofRepresentatives from 1979 to 1982 before being elected to the state Senate in1983. His committee work has focused on labor and health and social services,and he has worked on issues that include medical malpractice and welfarereform. He has been a state leader in the healthcare debate, publishing hiscomprehensive proposals in his 2004 book, "Fixing Our Broken HealthcareSystem".

Senator Scott, like hundreds of thousands of Americans annually, has losta family member to tobacco-related disease. He is one of two members of theNational Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) appointed to the foundation'sboard of directors. He hopes that his work on Legacy's board will help toraise awareness about the organization's mission to build a world where youngpeople reject tobacco and anyone can quit -- leaving legacies of longer,healthier lives.

"During my time in the Wyoming legislature I have worked to make diseaseprevention a top priority. In my new role on Legacy's board, I hope to attackAmerica's number-one cause of preventable death, tobacco usage. I sponsoredthe Wyoming Cancer Control Act, which was signed into law in March 2007. Iwill support the effective Legacy programs that are helping smokers quit andpreventing youth from starting to smoke."

Senator Scott was first motivated to become involved in tobacco controlefforts when his daughter, Abby, was a fourth grader. She brought home aWeekly Reader-style school publication that focused on youth access tocigarette vending machines and challenged him to safeguard kids from the harmsof smoking by saying "Daddy, make a law!" As a result, Scott sponsored a billto prohibit the sale of vending machine cigarettes to minors, which passedinto law a year later. His daughter helped to champion its passage bytestifying before Scott's colleagues in the Wyoming State Legislature.

A cattle rancher in Wyoming, Scott earned his MBA and bachelor's degreesat Harvard University. He also is active in organizations including theWyoming Stockgrowers Association, Audubon Society and The Nature Conservancy.

The American Legacy Foundation(R) is dedicated to building a world whereyoung people reject tobacco and anyone can quit.
