American Humane Association leading sheltering operations
ST. MARYS, Pa., June 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Humane Association is leading operations to shelter approximately 400 cats rescued from overcrowded conditions today at Animal Friends of Elk and Cameron Counties Sanctuary in Elk County, Pa.

American Humane's Red Star Animal Emergency Services(TM) team is assisting Elk County Humane Society and the ASPCA with the removal of the cats from the sanctuary, medical examination of the cats, and sheltering of the cats at an undisclosed location. PetSmart Charities is providing much-needed supplies for this effort. American Humane's team will be in Elk County, Pa., for approximately two weeks, sheltering and caring for the cats, as well as treating them for medical conditions, until more permanent arrangements are made.

Many of the cats are suffering from a host of ailments, including upper respiratory conditions, eye infections and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Many are also expected to test positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a disease that weakens the immune system and makes cats susceptible to secondary infections.
"We are happy that these cats are on their way to a better life," said Diane Robinson, the onsite shelter manager for American Humane. "Many of them have had a tough life up until this point, and although it is sad they are coming from a bad situation, it is rewarding to know that we are here to give them a fresh start."
