BALTIMORE, March 2 Alliance, Inc., a non-profit community-based provider of mental health treatment and rehabilitation services in the Baltimore area, has been selected as one of four agencies in Maryland to receive a Centers of Excellence in Recovery grant through the Howard County Mental Health Authority. The concept of recovery in mental health is rooted in the firm conviction that individuals with mental illness can and do recover.

Under the terms of the award, Alliance receives a one-time payment of $10,000, training, and ongoing technical assistance throughout 2010 in the recovery model of care from nationally-recognized experts. As a result of its participation, Alliance will foster an agency-wide culture of recovery and in turn, will disseminate this training to other service providers. Alliance officially launched the program last month at its Belcamp office in Harford County, Md.

"We are so delighted to be selected to receive this award," said Philip Taff, chief executive officer for Alliance. "To be chosen as one of four agencies in the state to receive this grant is truly an honor and we are proud to be recognized for our commitment to empowering individuals with mental illness to live life to the fullest."

The Centers for Excellence in Recovery program is made possible through funding received from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Mental Health Transformation Grant. The program is the result of collaboration among many mental health advocates including the Maryland Association of Core Service Agencies, the Mental Hygiene Administration, On Our Own of Maryland, Inc., and the University of Maryland Evidence-Based Practice Center. It is part of a coordinated effort to ensure that theory meets practice in the daily delivery of mental health services through the public mental health system.

Alliance, Inc., a private, non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, provides community-based services to individuals with disabilities. With headquarters in Dundalk, Md. and locations throughout central Maryland, Alliance has served the Baltimore community for more than 25 years. Alliance has received the highest level of accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for seven consecutive three-year terms, demonstrating its consistent conformance to the highest industry standards possible among community-based mental health providers.
