SHORT HILLS, N.J., Oct. 21 The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation announced today that Alan T. Brown has been elected to the Board of Directors. As part of the leadership team, Brown will be instrumental in continuing the Reeve Foundation's mission of curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information and advocacy.
Brown, a quadriplegic since 1988 and co-founder of the Alan T Brown Foundation to Cure Paralysis (ATBF), has spent the better part of his adult life confined to a wheelchair and working tirelessly on behalf of the spinal cord injury community. Alan is an integral member of ATBF's Outreach and Peer Mentoring program, and recently has focused on studying the quality of life issues associated with prolonged confinement to wheelchairs and paralysis.
"After 22 years of being paralyzed, it's a great honor for me to assist the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation on a national level," said Brown. "According to One Degree of Separation, the Reeve Foundation's prevalence population survey released earlier this year, there are nearly 6 million people living with paralysis, which is nearly 33% higher than any previous estimate showed. There is a great deal we still need to accomplish and I'm proud to be working alongside the Reeve Foundation in their efforts."
As a member of the Board of Directors, Brown will be responsible for assisting the Reeve Foundation in advancing its critical dual-mission of care and cure. He will work on the continued expansion of the Paralysis Resource Center, which has helped over one million people since its inception, as well as foster the continued growth of the research program that has funded more than 750 projects totaling $83 million.
"On behalf of the Alan T Brown Foundation, I am looking forward to working with the Reeve Foundation to help as many people as possible," said Brown. "Together, we will chart a new course, unify the spinal cord injury community and ultimately find a cure one day."
Brown is the founder and owner of PrimeTime Public Relations & Marketing in Hollywood, Florida. Prior to this, Brown had built a career that included working for Slim-Fast Foods, organizing advertising campaigns for top celebrities, managing community affairs for the Florida Marlins, and starting a Sports Radio Station. He has also completed two New York City Marathons in his wheelchair and is an avid skydiving and scuba diving enthusiast.
"We're excited to have Alan on board because he has proven time and time again to be an incredible advocate on behalf of the paralysis community," said Peter T. Wilderotter, president and CEO of the Reeve Foundation. "His years of work in the field along with his incredible business building skills will be a valuable asset to the Reeve Foundation and our mission."
