COLUMBUS, Ga., June 23 Aflac, the company that pays policyholders benefits fast when they are hurt or sick, has been named to Computerworld magazine's 2010 list of 100 Best Places to Work in IT. This is the 11th year that Aflac has appeared on the prestigious list. To compile the list, more than 500 nominated companies received a 75-question company survey asking about the organization's average salary and bonus increases, percentage of IT staff promoted, IT staff turnover rates, training and development, and the percentage of women and minorities in IT staff and management positions. In addition, information was collected on retention programs; how each organization rewards outstanding performance; and benefits, such as elder and child care, flextime, and reimbursement for college tuition and technology certification. Information from those surveys was used in compiling the 100 company profiles. Aflac is one of two Georgia-based companies to make the 2010 list.

"This is a tremendous honor for our IT team, and it validates Aflac's belief in our employees," Aflac Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer Gerald Shields said. "Everyone in Aflac's IT unit takes great pride in providing employees throughout the company the tools he or she needs to process claims, provide benefits faster and serve our customers with optimal efficiency. It is unquestionably a great place to work."

The survey recognized Aflac IT's low 5.6 percent turnover rate, which is well below the industry average of 11 percent as a key factor in determining the company's place on the list. They also noted Aflac's philanthropic culture, including how employees frequently volunteer at the Aflac Cancer Center at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, which was established in 1995 with a $3 million pledge from company executives. Since 1998, Aflac, its employees and independent agents have donated more than $55 million to the center.
