WASHINGTON, Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Roundy's Supermarkets Inc. have launched a campaign to demonstrate the nutritional and safety benefits of canned food to shoppers. The campaign will be conducted in 155 Pick 'n Save, Copps and Rainbow stores in Wisconsin and Minnesota from October 7-31, 2007.

Shoppers can sample a smoothie recipe made with canned fruit and learn fun ways to prepare canned foods through an educational recipe book. (Recipes are also included at www.mealtime.org). During the campaign, AISI will donate 10 cents for every five canned food items purchased at Roundy's stores. At the conclusion, a donation of up to $10,000 will be made to a local food bank. Steel cans are the most recycled food package (63% recycling rate in 2006).

"America has received a wake-up call from health professionals to take responsibility for meeting their families' nutritional needs," said Rich Tavoletti, director of AISI's Container Market Program and executive director of the Canned Food Alliance. "Research shows that canned foods are nutritionally comparable to their cooked fresh and frozen counterparts, and in some cases, they're even more nutritious. Canned foods are convenient, with a long shelf life. We're pleased to be working with Roundy's Supermarkets to help their customers make healthy food choices, and to have an opportunity to give a donation back to the community so that those in need of a nutritious meal can receive it."

AISI's Container Market Program is supported through the investment of the following AISI member companies:

-- ArcelorMittal

-- Dofasco Inc.

-- United States Steel Corporation

-- USS-POSCO Industries

AISI has 31 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and 130 associate and affiliate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI's member companies represent approximately 75 percent of both U.S. and North American steel capacity. For more information, visit www.steel.org.

Roundy's Supermarkets, Inc. owns and operates retail grocery stores in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois under the Pick 'n Save, Copps Food Center and Rainbow Foods banners.
