AHIP Statement on House Passage of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

WASHINGTON, May 1 Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP), today issued the following statement commending the House on the passage of H.R. 493:

"We applaud the House and Senate for reaching a consensus on this important legislation that prohibits discrimination and protects patients from the unauthorized use and disclosure of their genetic information. Health insurance plans are committed to protecting the privacy of patients while ensuring that they have continued access to high quality health care services in the emerging field of genetic medicine. This legislation advances this principle. Once signed into law, this legislation will strengthen patients' privacy protections while preserving their access to health insurance plans' innovative prevention and coordination programs that enhance the safety and quality of care."
