WASHINGTON, Oct. 2 The latest innovative approaches to thediagnosis, therapy, and prevention of cardiovascular disease will take centerstage at an upcoming international scientific symposium to be held inBoryspil, Ukraine. Organized by the Scientific Oncological and CardiologicalProduction Center "Max-Well" -- the main Ukrainian subsidiary of US-basedMaxWell Biocorporation, LLC -- the symposium will bring leading American,Ukrainian, and European researchers together on October 24, 2008 at thespacious new Max-Well pharmaceutical fill-and-finish facility in Boryspil.

Papers to be presented at the symposium will offer novel research intoheretofore little-understood links between latent and persistent infectiousagents (such as viruses and bacteria) and cardiovascular disease, and willdiscuss promising implications for its prevention and treatment offered byadvanced biopharmaceuticals such as interferon and human growth hormone.

Speakers will represent cutting-edge medical research institutions fromUkraine, the United States, and Western Europe, including the Academy ofMedical Sciences of Ukraine, the Amosov Institute (Ukraine), the StrazheskoInstitute (Ukraine), the Mechnikov Institute (Ukraine), the George WashingtonUniversity (USA), the University of West Virginia (USA), the GeorgetownUniversity School of Medicine (USA), the National Institutes of Health (USA),the Washington Hospital Center (USA), Champagne-Ardenne University (France),and others.

Dr. Stephen Epstein, Executive Director of the Cardiovascular ResearchInstitute and Director of Vascular Biology Research at the MedStar ResearchInstitute at Washington Hospital Center, and also Clinical Professor ofMedicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine, will give thekeynote speech at the symposium. Dr. Epstein previously served for over 30years as Chief of the Cardiology Branch at the National Heart, Lungs, andBlood Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.Dr. Epstein is an internationally recognized authority in the field, with over500 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals. His current researchinterests focus on understanding and treating cardiovascular disease at themolecular level.

Ukraine is a logical location for this event: cardiovascular diseases anddisorders are the leading cause of mortality in Ukraine today, and areresponsible for the largest share of all annual deaths there, many of thempreventable.
