Hundreds of thousands of dads have been touched by prostate cancer and entire families and their friends are starting to wear the band in support of their battle. It is also a most appropriate gift for the spouse or family in memory of those fathers who lost the battle.
More men are diagnosed with prostate cancer than women with breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of death for men. Dad has a 50 percent risk of prostate cancer in his lifetime...60 percent for African-Americans. The risk is much higher if there is a family history. According to Thomas N. Kirk, Us TOO president and CEO, "We are committed to educating and empowering men to take better care of their health by creating public awareness to generate early detection when the disease is most often successfully treated and thus reducing the number of deaths. Peer-to-peer support and education are major efforts of our organization."
Us TOO also provides free materials to help men and their families make informed choices on prostate cancer detection and treatment options. Founded in 1990 by prostate cancer survivors and their families who recognized that cancer affects 'us, too,' the grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit is headquartered in Illinois and works with 325 affiliated chapters worldwide.
Make it a blue ribbon Father's Day.
