"As a partner in health care in Canada, and a sponsor of this award for 12 years, we are pleased to once again work with CCHL to celebrate and recognize the vital contribution of nursing leaders," said Stephen Thompson, general manager Baxter Canada. "Baxter is very proud to honour Fiona Karmali, a forward-thinking leader driving positive change in our health care system, elevating standards of care and making lives better for patients, every day."

Fiona has been with B.C.'s Provincial Health Services Authority for over 17 years, working in the areas of operations, quality, safety and infection control. Prior to the PHSA Fiona worked with the BC Cancer Agency, serving as their first Chief Nursing Officer and first Senior Director, Cancer Care.

A strong advocate for the nursing profession throughout her distinguished career, Fiona currently sits on the board of the Registered Nurses' Foundation of British Columbia which awarded over $130,000 in nursing scholarships to BC residents over the last year. She has worked tirelessly to expand the role of nurse practitioners in British Columbia, and is currently leading the creation of a PHSA Policy Office that will standardize processes across the health authority.

About the Nursing Leadership AwardSince 2005, Baxter has been the proud sponsor of The Nursing Leadership Award, an initiative of the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL). The Nursing Leadership Award builds on the themes of patient-centred care and leadership and honours those who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence in these areas. Recipients seek to advance nursing at every level, to remove barriers between providers and to build systems of quality care for patients. They have displayed their leadership qualities both within, and outside, their organization.

The programs that they have delivered have resulted in a measurable improvement to their organization's excellence. The award is presented annually at the CCHL Honouring Health Leadership event.
