Conversion disorder

This is characterized by one or more neurologic symptoms that cannot be explained by a known neurologic or medical disorder.



Psychologic factors are associated with the initiation or exacerbation of the symptoms. This disorder was originally referred to a hysteria.

Epidemiology : 5% to 15% of Psychiatric consultations in hospitals are for conversion disorder. It is about 2 to 5 times more common in females than in males. It is more common in the rural population, in patients with less education and in those in the low socioeconomic group. It is most common in adolescence and young adulthood.
