Immunization in Children

Pneumococcal Vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccine is particularly effective in preventing meningitis and septicemia and the present vaccine available contains serotypes of virulent bacteria. A 23-valent vaccine increases efficacy by 28%.

Pneumococcal vaccine is currently recommended for children with sickle cell disease, children who have undergone splenectomy and children with nephrotic syndrome on steroids.
