Indication :


Warfarin is an oral anticoagulant.

Physiology :


Warfarin is used for chronic oral anticoagulation in a variety of clinical symptoms. Management of warfarin therapy is usually done by following the prothrombin time.

Normal Values :


2-5 µg/mL (6.5-16.2 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


>10 µg/mL (>32.4 µmol/L)

High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC), UV-spectrophotometry.

Side effects :


Side effects of warfarin include bleeding, osteoporosis or thinning of bones, gangrene of the skin, liver damage, and allergic reaction. Obstruction of the blood supply to the feet results in a condition called purple toe syndrome. It should not be administered during pregnancy due to possibility of congenital malformations, bleeding and abortion.
