Drug Name : Procainamide

Indication :


Procainamide is an antiarrhythmic drug with an active metabolite N-acetyl procainamide.

Physiology :


It is used in the treatment of variety of arrhythmias.

Normal Values :


4-10 µg/mL (17-42 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


> 20 µg/mL (>84.7 µmol/L)

Test Method :


High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC)

Side effects :


Adverse effects include nausea and vomiting, weakness, mental confusion, hallucinations, allergic reactions, bone marrow suppression resulting in reduced number of red and white blood cells and platelets, and possible liver damage. A systemic lupus erythematosus-like condition with joint, abdominal or chest pain and other symptoms may arise with its use. Low blood pressure and abnormalities in cardiac rhythm may occur with intravenous injection.
