Drug Name : Digoxin

Indication :


Digoxin is a widely used cardiac glycoside obtained from Digitalis purpurea and the toxicity of digoxin should be monitored to prevent underdosage, monitor therapeutic drug level, prevention and therapy of cardiac arrhythmias, patients with implanted pacemaker, especially patients on digoxin who are elderly, and who have renal failure, who have been given quinidine.

Physiology :


Digitoxin should not be confused with digoxin since there is cross reactivity between the two drugs.

Normal Values :


1-2 ng/ml (1.3-2.6 nmol/L)

Critical Values :


>3.0 ng/mL (>3.8 nmol/L)

Test Method :


Radioimmunoassay, Enzymeimmunoassay, fluroescence polarization immunoassay

Side effects :


Common adverse effects include loss of appetite , nausea , vomiting , diarrhea, gastrointestinal disturbances and blurred vision .Toxicity levels should be monitored in patients to avoid renal toxicity.
