Indication :


Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic, used to treat rickettsial infections.

Physiology :


Chloramphenicol is an extremely effective antibacterial agent which unfortunately has dose related toxicity.

Normal Values :


10-25 µg/mL ( 31-77 µmol/L)

Critical Values :


>25 µg/mL ( >77 µmol/L)

Side effects :


Use of chloramphenicol in babies may cause "Gray Baby Syndrome" a type of circulatory collapse that occurs mostly in neonates (especially premature babies) whose livers are unable to metabolize chloramphenicol effectively. Symptoms include ashen gray color of the skin, limp body, low blood pressure, vomiting and cyanosis (blue discolouration of lips and skin). Other adverse reactions of chloramphenicol include aplastic anemia (lack of production of red blood cells), bone marrow suppression, leukemia, peripheral neuritis,, allergic and neurotoxic reactions.
