Drug Toxicity Test

Amikacin/ Amikin

Drug Name :  Amikacin/ Amikin

Indication :Aminoglycoside antibiotics, including amikacin, are used primarily to treat infections caused by aerobic gram-negative bacilli. Peak levels are necessary to assure adequate therapeutic levels for organism being treated.

Physiology :Amikacin is cleared by the kidney and accumulates in renal tubular cells.

Normal Values :Therapeutic peak: 15-25 mg/mL (26-43 mmol/L).

Critical Values :Critical values: Toxic: Peak - > 35 mg/mL (>60 mmol/L), Intermediate: >10 mg/mL (>17 mmol/L).

Test Method :High performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA).

Side effects :Nephrotoxicity occurs mostly in chronic cases of Amikacin consumption. Creatinine levels should be monitored every 2-3 days as an indicator of impending renal toxicity. Nephrotoxicity occurs in as many as 10% to 25% of patients receiving aminoglycosides. Aminoglycosides may also cause irreversible ototoxicity (ear loss).
