Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, used for lowering high cholesterol and triglycerides in certain patients with appropriate diet. It reduces the risk of cardio vascular diseases. 
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 
Hypersensitivity; active liver disease; It should be used with extreme caution in children younger than 8 years children, pregnant women and breastfeeding.

Category X : Studies in animals or humans have demonstrated fetal abnormalities and/or there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on adverse reaction data from investigational or marketing experience, and the risks involved in use of the drug in pregnant women clearly outweigh potential benefits.

Dosage & When it is to be taken : 
PO: 10-40 mg/day at bedtime, adjust at 4-weekly intervals if needed. Max: 40 mg/day.
How it should be taken : 
This medication available in the form of tablet to take by mouth, once a day, with or without food.
Warnings and Precautions : 
*4 hours time interval needed in between cholestyramine (Questran) or colestipol (Cholestid), and this medication.
*It may cause dizziness. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
*Monitor kidney function regularly because it may lead to kidney failure.
*It may increase creatine phosphokinase and transaminases levels.
*Severe inter current illness increases risk of muscle disease, rapid breakdown of skeletal muscle (rhabdomyolysis).
*Stop this medication during illness.
Side Effects : 
Central Nervous System- Sleeplessness, fatigue, dizziness, extreme tiredness, headache.
Heart- Chest pain
Gastrointestinal- Loss of appetite, blood in stool, gas.
Skin- Allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles.
Musculoskeletal- Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM).
Miscellaneous- Hoarseness, muscle pain, hypersensitivity, unusual bleeding, flu-like symptoms.
Other Precautions : 
*Women of childbearing potential, use adequate contraception.
Storage Conditions : 
Oral: Store it at 25°C. Store it in an airtight container and keep away from children.
