Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is an oral anti-diabetic drug (alpha-glucosidase inhibitor), prescribed for type 2 diabetes either alone or with other medications.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Contraindicated in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (high blood glucose with the presence of ketones in the urine), inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal blockage, prolonged intestinal diseases and hypersensitivity.

Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.


When it is to be taken : PO- The initial recommended dose is 25 mg 3 times daily. It may be increased after four to eight weeks to 50-100mg three times daily.
How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.
Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of decreased level of sugar in blood, kidney impairment, liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side Effects : 
Most Common (Gastrointestinal)- Abdominal pain/bloating, diarrhea and flatulence.
Other Precautions : 
* Monitor blood sugar level regularly.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature (15-30°C), and in an airtight container.
