Why is Miglitol Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an oral anti-diabetic drug (alpha-glucosidase inhibitor), prescribed for type 2 diabetes either alone or with other medications. It slows down carbohydrates metabolism.

When should Miglitol not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (high blood glucose with the presence of ketones in the urine), inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal blockage, prolonged intestinal diseases and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Miglitol?

PO- The initial recommended dose is 25 mg 3 times daily. It may be increased after four to eight weeks to 50-100mg three times daily.

How should Miglitol be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.
