Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is halogenated ether, used for maintenance of general anesthesia.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Contraindicated in patients with rapid rise in body temperature (fever) triggered by exposure to certain drugs used for general anesthesia and hypersensitivity.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 1.5 to 3.0% isoflurane usually produce surgical anesthesia in 7 to 10 minutes.
Maintenance: 1.0 to 2.5% concentration when nitrous oxide is used concomitantly. An additional 0.5 to 1.0% may be required when isoflurane is given using oxygen alone.
How it should be taken : It comes as a solution for injection and also as an inhaler to inhale orally.
Special Instruction : 
* Patient may develop with increased blood loss, monitor them carefully.
* Patients need proper ventilation while using this medication.
* Caution needed in pregnant and breastfeeding women.
Side Effects : 
Respiratory depression, low blood pressure, irregular heart rhythm, shivering, nausea, vomiting and liver failure.
Other Precautions : 
* A trained and experienced person who can handle anesthetized patient should administer it.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature (15°-30°C) and in an airtight container.
