International- Novolog Inj, NovoLog Mix 50/50 , NovoLog Mix 70/30.
Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a fast-acting form of the hormone insulin, prescribed for diabetes mellitus. It is used with other medium- or long-acting insulin product injected just below the skin to control high blood sugar. It helps sugar (glucose) get into the cells.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in patients with low blood sugar, allergic to this medication, excipients.

Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.


When it is to be taken : 
SC- Usual range: The recommended dose is 0.5 to 1 u/kg/day.
How it should be taken : 
It is injected under the skin prior to meals. It may also be administered through continuous infusion.
Special Instruction : 
*Avoid changing the type of insulin, without health care provider’s advice.
*It may harm liver or kidney functions.
*Monitor serum glucose, potassium, electrolytes, HbA1c and lipid profile regularly.
*Precautions should be taken during concomitant illness especially infections low level potassium in blood.
*Change the injection site within the same area.
*Developing a fever or infection, eating significantly more than prescribed, or missing your dose of insulin may cause high blood sugar (hyperglycemia).
*Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver disease, nerve problems, adrenal, pituitary or thyroid problems, diabetic ketoacidosis, alcoholism, smoking habit, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Side Effects : 
Metabolic- Low blood sugar, weight gain and low potassium level in blood.
Central Nervous System- Headache, neuropathy, seizures and sensory disturbances.
Skin- Lipodystrophy (from repeated insulin injection into same site), itching, rash and skin disorder.
Allergic Reactions- Rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue and wheezing.
Gastrointestinal- Extreme thirst, extreme hunger, dry mouth, nausea and vomiting.
EYE- Diabetic retinopathy and inflammation of nasopharynx.
Genitourinary- Urinary tract infection.
Heart- Fast or irregular heart beat.
Respiratory- Upper respiratory tract infection.
Local- Catheter occlusions, infusion-site reactions, itching at injection site, redness and swelling.
Lab tests- Elevated level of alkaline phosphatase.
Miscellaneous- Accidental injury, chest pain, absent reflexes, influenza, onychomycosis ( fungal infection of the nail) and peripheral edema.
Other Precautions : 
*If you will be traveling across time zones, consult your doctor concerning adjustments in your insulin schedule.
*Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
Storage Conditions : 
Store unopened vials, cartridges and pens in the refrigerator. Do not freeze.
