Why is Ibrutinib Prescribed? (Indications)

Ibrutinib belongs to a group of medications called as kinase inhibitors. It is prescribed for the treatment of cancer of the cells of the immune system (mantle cell lymphoma) in patients who have been treated earlier with a minimum of one chemotherapy medication. Ibrutinib is also used in the treatment of a cancer that begins in the white blood cells (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and in the lymph nodes (small lymphocytic lymphoma), and a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (Waldenström macroglobulinemia). It mainly stops the spread of the cancer cells by blocking the abnormal proteins that signals them to multiply.

When should Ibrutinib not be taken? (Contraindications)

Ibrutinib should be avoided in patients who are allergic to the drug, with history of heart, kidney or liver disease, any infections or surgery, with certain other medications or intake of grapefruit juice, or during pregnancy.

What is the dosage of Ibrutinib?

The recommended dose is 560mg to be taken once daily for the treatment of mantle cell lymphoma and 420mg once daily for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia and Waldenström macroglobulinemia.

How should Ibrutinib be taken?

Ibrutinib comes in the form of a capsule to be taken once daily orally by mouth. Capsules should be swallowed as a whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or open the capsule.

Blood: Reduced platelet, white blood cell and red blood cell counts. Bleeding may occur resulting in bruising in the skin, bloody or black stools, dark brown, pink or red-colored urine, or dizziness, confusion, speech problems, headache or seizures.
Respiratory system: Cough, shortness of breath.
Skin: Itching of the skin, skin rashes and skin cancers. Other cancers may also occur.
Central Nervous system: Dizziness, headache.
Cardiovascular system: Discomfort in the chest, irregular or fast heartbeats, high blood pressure.
Urinary system: Decreased urination.

• Avoid eating Seville oranges or grapefruit and do not drink grapefruit juice while taking ibrutinib as it may increase the concentration of the drug in the blood.
