Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a narcotic analgesic, prescribed for moderate to severe pain along with other medications. It relieves cough by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing.
When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): Contraindicated in patients with obstructive airway disease, infants and young children with acute diarrhea.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Dosage & When it is to be taken : 
PO- The recommended dose is 5-10 mg 4-6 hourly.
How it should be taken : 
It comes as a tablet, capsule, syrup, and solution to take by mouth.
Warnings and Precautions : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of lung, liver or kidney disease; breathing problems, head injury, prostate enlargement, urethral stricture, Addison's disease, increased eye pressure, under active or over active thyroid, intestinal, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
* It may cause drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
Side Effects : 
Nausea, vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, confusion, CNS effects, CV disorders, dry mouth, sweating, facial flushing, decreased libido, convulsions.
Other Precautions : 
* Avoid excess dosage.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. ppp
