Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is a structural isomer of isoflurane, prescribed for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in people with known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (Life threatening condition with an elevated body temperature triggered by exposure to certain drugs used for general anesthesia).

Category B : Animal reproduction studies have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester.


When it is to be taken : 
Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia- Adult: Induction- 0.4% v/v in air, O2 or nitrous oxide-oxygen mixtures, increase by increments of 0.5% v/v every few breaths to a max of 4.5%. Maintenance: 0.5-3% v/v. do not exceed 3% v/v during spontaneous respiration.
How it should be taken : 
It comes as a solution for inhalation, to be administered by a trained anesthesia professional.
Special Instruction : 
* Patient may develop with increased risk of abnormal heart rate/rhythm, monitor patient condition carefully during and after the treatment.
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart, lungs, liver or kidney impairment; elderly, obesity, epilepsy, during pregnancy and lactation.
* It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
Side Effects : 
Most Common- High body temperature, hallucinations, abnormal heart rhythm, fainting or lightheadedness, dizziness and drowsiness.
Miscellaneous- Headache, nausea, vomiting, shivering, difficulty in breathing and yellowing of eyes or skin.
Other Precautions : 
* Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication.
* It may cause mental or mood changes, if it so consult with your doctor.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it room temperature (5º-30ºC).
