Why is Enflurane Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a structural isomer of isoflurane, prescribed for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia.

When should Enflurane not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in people with known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia (Life threatening condition with an elevated body temperature triggered by exposure to certain drugs used for general anesthesia).

What is the dosage of Enflurane?

Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia- Adult: Induction- 0.4% v/v in air, O2 or nitrous oxide-oxygen mixtures, increase by increments of 0.5% v/v every few breaths to a max of 4.5%. Maintenance: 0.5-3% v/v. do not exceed 3% v/v during spontaneous respiration.

How should Enflurane be taken?

It comes as a solution for inhalation, to be administered by a trained anesthesia professional.

• Patient may develop with increased risk of abnormal heart rate/rhythm, monitor patient condition carefully during and after the treatment.

• It may cause dizziness or drowsiness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

Most Common- High body temperature, hallucinations, abnormal heart rhythm, fainting or lightheadedness, dizziness and drowsiness.
Miscellaneous- Headache, nausea, vomiting, shivering, difficulty in breathing and yellowing of eyes or skin.
