Why is Emtricitabine- Rilpivirine- Tenofovir Prescribed? (Indications)

This combination medication contains a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) and 2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) (antivirals), prescribed for HIV-1 infection in naive adults.

When should Emtricitabine- Rilpivirine- Tenofovir not be taken? (Contraindications)

It should not be co-administered with anticonvulsants, antimycobacterials, proton pump inhibitors, glucocorticoid, St. John's wort.

What is the dosage of Emtricitabine- Rilpivirine- Tenofovir?

The recommended dose is one tablet taken orally once daily with a meal. Each tablet contains 200 mg of emtricitabine, 27.5 mg of rilpivirine hydrochloride and 300 mg of tenofovir.

How should Emtricitabine- Rilpivirine- Tenofovir be taken?

It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Emtricitabine- Rilpivirine- Tenofovir?

• It should not be used for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of kidney problems, lactic acidosis, liver problems including hepatitis B or C infections, osteoporosis, irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation), mental illness, suicidal thoughts, irregular heartbeat, any allergy, who are taking other medications, children, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause dizziness, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

• It does not stop spread of HIV infection to others; avoid sexual contact, sharing of needles, injection supplies, or items like toothbrushes or razors during treatment period.

• Patient may develop with increased risk of suicidal thoughts; watch them carefully.

Patient may develop Immune Reconstitution Syndrome.

• Accumulation of body fats occurs in some patients; if it is so consult with your doctor.

• Monitor liver function, kidney function, and bone mineral density regularly while taking this medication.
