Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an active immunization, prescribed for diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Contraindicated in patients with encephalitis (brain swelling), hypersensitivity reactions within 7 days after the dose of DTaP.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 
IM- The recommended dose is 0.5 ml for administration at 2, 4, and 6 months of age, at intervals of six to eight weeks, with a fourth dose given at 15-20 months of age.
How it should be taken : 
It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into a large muscle.
Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients with history of bleeding disorder, cancer, HIV, seizures, fever over 105o F.
Side Effects : 
Mild fever, redness, pain, tenderness, swelling at injection site, tiredness, nausea and vomiting.
Other Precautions : 
*Avoid excess dosage.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it in refrigerator (2-8o C), do not freeze it.
