• Dequalinium is an antiseptic.
• It is used for infection in mouth and vagina.

Why is Dequalinium Prescribed? (Indications)

Dequalinium is an antiseptic which helps in killing many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and fungi.
It is used as lozenges or oral paint to treat infections in the mouth like sore throat, tonsillitis, and mouth ulcers. It has a soothing activity on pain.
It is also used as vaginal tablets for vaginal bacterial infections.

When should Dequalinium not be taken? (Contraindications)

• Dequalinium should not be used in patients allergic to ammonium compounds or to the drug itself.
• It should also not be used in children.
• The vaginal tablet should not be used in the presence of ulceration of the vagina or the cervix. It should not be used by pregnant women within 12 hours before the birth of the baby.
• It should also not be used in girls before their first period.

What is the dosage of Dequalinium?

• The recommended dose of dequalinium is 0.25 mg one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours as needed, up to a maximum of eight in a day.
• The oral paint can be applied to the affected part every 2 to 3 hours with a brush or a cotton swab.
• The vaginal tablets are used as 10 mg, one tablet inserted deep into the vagina daily for 6 days.

How should Dequalinium be taken?

• The lozenges should be sucked slowly.
• The vaginal tablets are inserted deep into the vagina just before going to bed at night.
• The tablets should not be used while the patient is bleeding during menstruation.

What are the warnings and precautions for Dequalinium?

• Do not exceed more than eight lozenges in 24 hours.

• Dequalinium lozenges contain food coloring, which may cause allergic reactions.

• Avoid swallowing immediately after the application of oral paint so that it remains on the affected part.

• The vaginal tablets should be used for their full course of 6 days. The remains of the tablet may sometimes be noted in the underwear. Women are advised to wear a sanitary pad or a panty liner while using the medication. If the vagina is very dry, the tablet may be moistened with a drop of water before it is inserted so that it dissolves.

• Vaginal washes, soaps or spermicides should not be used during the treatment with the vaginal tablets. Non-latex condoms and diaphragms should not be used within 12 hours of treatment; therefore alternate methods of contraception should be used.
