Why is Deferiprone Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a chelating agent, prescribed for thalassaemia. It works by attaching to iron in the body so that it can be excreted in feces.

When should Deferiprone not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with abnormal decrease in white blood cells.

What is the dosage of Deferiprone?

Adult: Oral- 25 mg/kg 3 times/day, up to 100 mg/kg/day.

How should Deferiprone be taken?

It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with or without food.

What are the warnings and precautions for Deferiprone?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of liver and kidney impairment, decrease in blood counts, during pregnancy and lactation.
