Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is an antiviral agent, prescribed for HIV infection with other antiviral agents. It is a protease inhibitor and blocks the enzyme activity. This medication slows down the spread of virus in the body.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 

Hypersensitivity, co- administering with other medications will cause life-threatening reactions.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : Adult: initial: 800 mg (two 400 mg tablets) taken with ritonavir 100 mg once daily with food. Maintenance: 600mg taken with ritonavir 100 mg twice daily with food. Child: Dose is based on body weight of the child.
How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet to take by mouth, with food.
Special Instruction : 
* Caution should be exercised in patients who are taking other medications, diabetes, bleeding disorder, liver or kidney disease, severe allergy, tuberculosis, pneumonia, elderly, pregnancy, and breast-feeding.
* If the patient is taking Didanosine, it should be taken one hour before this medication in order to avoid drug interactions.
* Fat accumulation may occur in different parts of the body, monitor cholesterol level regularly.
Side Effects : 
Body as whole- Fever, swelling, dry mouth and sore throat.
Gastrointestinal - Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and constipation.
Central Nervous System - Headache, confusion and anxiety.
Respiratory System - Cough, hiccups and shortness of breath.
Skin - Rash, sweating, skin inflammation and blistering.
Metabolic- Increase in liver enzyme, cholesterol and blood sugar.
Other Precautions : 
* It may increase bleeding events; avoid injury, cuts and bruises.
Storage Conditions : 
Store it at room temperature and in an airtight container. Keep away from children and pets.
