Why it is prescribed (Indications) : 
This medication is an anti-inflammatory agent, prescribed for leprosy with other drugs. It is also used to treat reactions to anti – leprosy drugs.

When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): 


Hypersensitivity, lactation.

Category C : Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.


When it is to be taken : 
Multibacillary Leprosy treatment: 50 mg daily plus 300 mg once a month along with other antileprosy drugs for 1 year.
Reactions in Leprosy: Treatment depends on severity. 100-200 mg/day for up to 3 month.
How it should be taken : 
It comes as a capsule to take by mouth once a day, with or without food.
Special Instruction : 
*It may cause dizziness, drowsiness. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.
*It may cause a red to brownish black discoloration of skin, mucous membranes and secretions.
*Avoid direct sunlight; wear protective clothing, including a hat. Also, wear sunglasses.
*Caution needed for patients with GI symptoms, liver and kidney damage and during pregnancy.
Side Effects : 
Skin- Pigmentation from pink to brownish-black, scaly skin and dryness, rash and itching.
Gastrointestinal- Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal intolerance.
Eye- Discoloration of cornea and conjunctiva along with dryness and irritation of the eyes.
Other- Discoloration of urine, feces, sputum, sweat, elevated blood sugar, elevated ESR(erythrocyte sedimentation rate).
Central Nervous System- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, giddiness, nerve pain, taste disorder.
Other Precautions : 
*Do not change the dosage without your doctor's advice.
Storage Conditions : 
Oral: Store below 30°C. Store it in airtight container and keep away from children.
