Trade Name(s): International- Kaopectate, Pepto-Bismol, Pepto-Bismol, Pink Bismuth. Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is an antidiarrheal agent, prescribed for diarrhea, heartburn, and upset stomach. It decreases the flow of fluids and electrolytes into the bowel.
Dosage & When it is to be taken : PO- The usual dose is 2 tablets every half-hour to one hour. Liquid- The usual dose is 2 tablespoonfuls every half-hour to one hour if needed. How it should be taken : It comes as a tablet and liquid to take by mouth, with or without food. Warnings and Precautions : * Caution should be exercised in patients with history of ulcer, bleeding problem, bloody stools, kidney disease, who are taking other medications, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. * It may cause dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness or blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication. Side Effects : Central Nervous System - Anxiety, loss of hearing, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, headache, depression, slurred speech, involuntary movements. Gastrointestinal- Constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain. Musculoskeletal - Muscle weakness, muscle spasms. Metabolic - Increased thirst, increased sweating. Respiratory - Fast or deep breathing. Eye and ENT - Ringing in the ear, vision problem. * Avoid excess dosage. Storage Conditions : Store it at room temperature and in an airtight container. u |
