Therapeutic Classification : Cholinesterase Inhibitor
Trade Name(s): International- Mytelase. Why it is prescribed (Indications) : This medication is a cholinesterase inhibitor used in the treatment of myasthenia gravis. It inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine. It prevents breakdown of acetylcholine in the body, which is needed for muscle functions. When it is not to be taken (Contraindications): It is not prescribed in patients who are taking mecamylamine, or any other ganglionic blocking agents; known hypersensitivity.
Dosage & When it is to be taken : PO- The dose is based on patient’s condition and response to this medication. The recommended dose is 5mg to 25mg, three to four times in a day. How it should be taken : It comes as a capsule to take by mouth, with or without food. Warnings and Precautions : * Caution should be exercised in patients with history of nerve disorder, asthma, epilepsy, increase in thyroid hormone, Parkinson’s disease, urinary obstruction, heart, lung disease, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Side Effects : Most Common- Excessive salivation, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constriction of pupil, urinary urgency, sweating, nausea, increase in bronchial secretions, tears and vomiting. *Avoid excess dosage. Storage Conditions : Store it at room temperature (25°C), and in an airtight container. |
