New research adds more evidence to the severity of sleep disordered breathing and nocturnal hypoxemia which may help predict both glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

"Because people with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are often overweight or obese it has been difficult to interpret earlier studies of the relationship between sleep disordered breathing and metabolic disorders," said Brian Kent, MBBCh, research fellow at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin....

Middle aged people suffering from even mild obstructive sleep apnea have a greater risk of experiencing a stroke that can be fatal.

The serious nature of the problem was captured in a landmark study which found that middle-age and older men with even mild levels of OSA were in danger of increased risk of stroke and death. While a link between OSA and stroke is clear, OSA''s effect on the cerebral (brain) vessels is not. In an effort to shed light on this relationship, researchers in Texas have ...

Taking vitamin B6 helps people recall their bizarre dreams, shows study.

While we supposedly all have 4-6 dreams a night it is usually hard to remember them, particularly in their entirety.

The vitamin, which is found in meats, whole grains, vegetables, nuts and bananas, has long been thought to help recollect dreams and enhance their lucidity but this was based on theory rather than a concrete study.

However, a small study done back in 2002 has come to light which apparently goes some way to proving the familiar theory....

In a recent research it was found that obstructive sleep apnea condition causes changes in blood vessel function that reduces blood supply to the heart in people who are otherwise healthy. The research is published in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association.

However, treatment with 26 weeks of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) improved study participants' blood supply and function.

According to Luigi De Gennaro at the University of Rome, Italy, it is the brain mechanism that controls whether we remember or forget things when we are awake is involved.

To test it De Gennaro and his team used an electroencephalogram (EEG) to monitor the brain activity of 65 students as they slept: 30 who habitually wake up while in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and 35 who usually wake in stage 2 non-REM sleep....
