Exploring a skin infection, researchers discovered an important population of immune cells called memory T cells living in parts of the body that are in contact with the environment, such as skin, lung and GI tract. How these "resident" memory T cells are generated is a mystery, and their importance with regard to how our immune system remembers infection and how it prevents against re-infection is being studied intensively.

Scientists have found that a strain of yeast implicated in skin conditions like eczema, can be killed by certain peptides and could provide a new treatment for these debilitating skin conditions.

20 percent of children in the UK suffer from atopic eczema and whilst this usually clears up in adolescence, 7 percent of adults will continue to suffer throughout their lifetime.

While it is widely believed that the rising incidence of eczema in children may be triggered off by food-related allergies, experts also warn parent against single-handedly eliminating important food groups from children's diets. The exclusion of milk from baby's or kids' diets is a case-in-point.

The German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG) stresses that elimination diets probably help only when a child has a proven food sensitivity or allergy.

UK skin specialists have warned that excessive use of video game consoles can lead to a skin disorder.

Describing this condition in the British Journal of Dermatology, the researchers have revealed that a 12-year-old girl had to attend a Swiss hospital recently after having intensely painful sores on the palms of her hands.

They say that the little girl, who was a regular user of a games console, recovered fully after 10 days of abstinence.

The Department of Health-backed study will also look at the differing effects of hard and soft water on the condition which causes dry and itchy skin. Eczema has been reported to be more common in hard-water areas but it is not understood why that might be.
