A study conducted by Saudi Arabian researchers has confirmed that a herb called Rocket "Eruca sativa L." (EER), a member of the Brassicacae family, has potential anti-ulcer medicinal properties.

Led by Dr. Syed Rafatullah, the research team validated the gastric anti-ulcer properties of EER on experimentally-induced gastric secretion and ulceration in albino rats.

For their research, the group undertook gastric acid secretion studies using pylorus-ligated rats.

They revealed that ...

A study, published in the June 6 issue of JAMA, has identified novel genetic mutations linked to hereditary diffuse gastric cancer. It states that these mutations are due to both independent mutational events and common ancestry. The study has been released early to coincide with its presentation at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

According to background information in the article, gastric cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death worldwide. There ...

A more intensive postoperative chemotherapy regimen for high-risk gastric cancer patients did not improve their survival, according to a randomized controlled trial in the April 18 Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The five-year survival rate for gastric cancer patients who undergo radical surgery is typically between 15 and 32 percent. Efforts to improve survival with new therapies, including postoperative chemotherapy, have yet to yield statistically significant results.

Absorption Of Carbon Nanotube Measured In Worms Revolutionize Cancer Research

Researchers from the University of Michigan have discovered how to measure the absorption of multi-walled carbon nanoparticles into worms and cancer cells. Carbon nanotubes were discovered in 1991, and have a great value in several areas, including pharmacology and for hydrogen storage in fuel cells. But despite their promise, a big problem was that it's not known how multi-walled carbon nanotubes will impact the living environment. This discovery can now help the scientists in understanding how ...

Patients on non-selective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or COX-2-selective NSAIDs, have reduced risk of gastric ulcers by taking NEXIUM (Regd) (esomeprazole magnesium). These results were from from two clinical trials and will be in the April 2006 edition of the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
NSAIDs include traditional, non-selective drugs, such as ibuprofen, naproxen and aspirin, and newer COX-2-selective agents.

The identification of a novel compound, CDDO-Im, shown to possess strong anti-tumor properties in studies conducted on animal models could soon revolutionize the treatment of liver cancer patients. The compound has been found to increase the intrinsic resistance to carcinogens (cancer causing substances) by enhancing the function of enzymes that remove toxins from the body. Further results about the compound have been published in the journal Cancer Research.

An article appearing in the January issue of The Journal of Urology says that drugs used to treat gastrointestinal stromal cancers (GISTs) are likely to be ineffective for patients with full blown kidney cancer.
These findings are reported by investigators at the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, who say that the drug in question is not going to help patients with high grade renal cell carcinoma. "While this finding does not seem like good news for patients with kidney cancer," said Bradley Leibovich, M....
