An endoscope designed for locating and clearing out gallstones and gallbladder lesions has been developed by scientists from the Second People's Hospital of Panyu District and Central South University in China.

The authors describe the device in a paper accepted to the AIP's Review of Scientific Instruments. A tiny ultrasonic probe at the tip of the endoscope locates gallstones, even small ones embedded in the organ's lining. Surgeons can use the horn-shaped "absorbing box" to get rid of ...

A group of researchers from the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology in Hyderabad have identified a gene defect in the liver that causes gall bladder stones which affects more than 6 percent of the population in India. According to the report published in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the researchers have found that a mutation in the gene ABCG8 leads to the excess production of cholesterol in the liver which in turn causes gall stones. Some of the major causes of gall stones include ...

A new research suggests that typhoid fever bacteria collect on gallstones to perpetuate the disease.

People who harbour these bacteria in their gallbladders, even without symptoms, can infect others with active typhoid fever, especially in developing areas of the world where sanitation is poor. The disease spreads through fecal-oral contact, such as through poor hand-washing by people who prepare food.

Scientists and physicians have long known that these bacteria, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, accumulate in the gallbladder....

Intense exercise lowers the risk of developing painful gallstones, say British researchers.

In the University of East Anglia study of 25,000 men and women, researchers found that those who were the most active had a 70 percent reduced risk of those complaints, reports The BBC.

Writing in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, boffins said one reason might be reduced cholesterol levels in the bile.

They said exercise also raised levels of "good" ...

Surgeons can safely operate on patients with mild gallstone pancreatitis within 48 hours of admission, rather than wait for the painful inflammation in the pancreas to subside first, says new research. Patients with mild gallstone pancreatitis usually stay in the hospital for several days, waiting for the symptoms to subside, before undergoing surgery to remedy the condition. A new study from researchers at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) indicates patients may no longer have ...

Use of cholesterol-lowering drugs or statins for over a year can significantly lower a person's risk of developing gallstones that require surgery, a new study has said.

Gallstones are classified as either cholesterol (80 percent-90 percent) or pigment stones (10 percent-20 percent), with cholesterol stones formed on the basis of cholesterol-supersaturated bile.

"Statins decrease hepatic [liver] cholesterol biosynthesis and may therefore lower the risk of cholesterol gallstones by reducing the cholesterol concentration in the bile....

Researchers at the University of East Anglia have revealed that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol everyday may be able to prevent formation of gallstones. The researchers analyzed the diets of 25,639 people over ten years and found that 267 of them developed gallstones. The researchers reported that people who drank two units of alcohol a day had their risk of developing gallstones reduced by 32%. Gall stones are usually formed by hardened cholesterol. The theory is that alcohol does not allow ...

Ageing and body mass index could indicate presence of gallstones in both men and women. In men there were additional risk factors like diabetes, liver cirrhosis, peptic ulcer and coronary disease, low levels of HDL and total cholesterol, and high levels of triglycerides. Triglycerides are a type of fat found in our blood. Hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals. If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, you may have high triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia). Apparently gallstones could result from such an accumulation....

Exercise will not only help you get rid of those extra pounds, but as it turns out, also keep you free from gallstones, says a new research. The finding is based on a study by researchers at University of Illinois who showed that exercise-trained mice are less susceptible to gallstones than inactive mice. The study led by Kenneth Wilund, a faculty member in the U of I Division of Nutritional Sciences and an Assistant Professor in Kinesiology and Community Health has identified potential mechanisms to explain the reason behind this phenomenon....

A group of research scientist from the University of Bonn along with Romanian colleagues has discovered a gene variant which augments the possibility of developing gallstone considerably (Hepatology No. 46, 11 July 2007, DOI 10.1002/hep.21847). Probably one on ten Europeans has this variant in their genetic disposition. The probability of them developing a gallstone in their life time goes up two to three times higher. The particular gene has the directions ...

According to a report in the November 27 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA/Archives journal, weight cycling may increase men's risk for gallstones later in life. When a solid mass of cholesterol, bile and calcium salts gets accumulated in the gall bladder, it results in the Gallstone disease.

Around 25,000 men were targeted for the study and it was found that the associations remained when researchers considered each participant's body mass index (BMI), further suggesting that it ...

Women who have excessive fat around the waist are twice as likely to develop gallstones compared to their counterparts.

Gallstones are collections of solid crystals (predominantly cholesterol) in the gallbladder or in the bile ducts (biliary tract). Americans undergo more than 800,000 gallstone operations each year and it is the most common abdominal illness seen among women in the US.

Researchers led by Chung-Jyi Tsai at the University of Kentucky at Lexington studied more than 42,000 women in 1986....

Several studies have shown that consumption of trans fatty acids leads to development of diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Trans fatty acids are the hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oil present in some margarines, candies, baked goods and many processed foods. They are produced commercially in
large quantities by heating vegetable oils in the presence of metal catalysts and in the process the poly unsaturated fatty acids are removed. Trans fatty acids increase LDL cholesterol ...

According to the recent Harvard Nurses' Health study, women who drink four cups of coffee per day run a lower risk of developing gallstones than those who do not drink coffee. Previous studies on men have shown similar results.

Women are twice as likely to be affected with gallstones than men, and those women who are overweight or have experienced rapid weight loss ran a higher risk.

80,900 women were tracked over a period of two decades to compare their coffee consumption to whether they had their gall bladder removed....
