The degeneration of
bony tissue is termed as bosteoporosis/b. In osteoporosis, the affected
bone becomes porous. This bbone disease/b is silent but highly distressing
and it generally affects the elderly people.

In Australia, about 25 percent of females with hip
fracture do not survive more than a year. The mortality is higher for men with
same problem.

Age also affects the
female mortality. It is seen that females above 65 years are more prone to die
due to hip fracture than breast cancer....

Medical records of 104 post menopausal women treated for a DRF, and 107 age-matched control patients with soft tissue disease, were reviewed. Mean vitamin D levels were "significantly" lower in the DRF group of patients. Specifically, 26 percent of the DRF patients were vitamin D insufficient (having vitamin D serum levels between 20 and 32 ng/ml), ...

Patients who suffer hip fractures should be rapidly taken through hospital emergency departments and operated on within 48 hours of admission.

This is the recommendation contained in new consensus guidelines developed by UK experts in anaesthesia, orthopaedics, geriatrics and emergency medicine and published in the January issue of IAnaesthesia/I.

However, patients in one in five hospitals in England and Wales currently wait longer than two days, risking lengthier inpatient stays, increased ...

Patients who have had a major fracture because of osteoporosis do not undergo testing for bone mineral density or receive medications to help prevent additional fractures. Because the research subjects were mostly men age 60 and older, the findings raise perhaps more troubling questions about the medication's effects on women with COPD, a group already at a significantly higher risk than men for fractures.

Height loss is common as people age and is associated with back pain. Causes include changes in the curvature of the spine, narrowing of intervertebral discs and vertebral fractures. Two-thirds of adults have back pain at any time.
