Elderly patients who have tuberculosis are at increased risk of dying from lung cancer, finds a new study.

"There is a high incidence of both tuberculosis and lung cancer among the elderly in Hong Kong," said lead author Chi Chiu Leung, MBBS, consultant chest physician in the Tuberculosis and Chest Service of the Department of Health of Hong Kong. "In our prospective follow-up study of a cohort of 61,239 subjects aged 65 years or older, we found that active tuberculosis was an independent predictor ...

Using the molecular biomarkers present in the tissue and fluid lining of the lungs may be another technique that can be used in lung cancer screening, according to a new study published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

Since the National Lung Screening Trial found that 96.4 percent of the positive CT screening results were false positive, scientists have been looking for ways to more accurately diagnose patients. This research focused on a way to determine if the nodules detected by the CT screening, are in fact malignant or benign....

Researchers have discovered a single gene that promotes initial development of most common form of lung cancer.

The study, published in the journal on April 24, shows that MMP-10 is a growth factor secreted and then used by cancer stem-like cells to keep themselves vital. These cells then drive lung cancer and its spread, and are notoriously immune to conventional treatment.

Media reports indicate that lung cancer is affecting more women than men in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.

The number of women with lung cancer rose 38.4 percent over the past five years while the growth rate for men was 16.9 percent, the Shanghai Daily reported.

However, men were still far more likely to get the deadly disease.

The incidence of lung cancer among men was 88 per 100,000 people and 30 among women.

An expert said the rise in female cases has resulted due to many young women taking up smoking....

One in every 3,600 children born in Canada has cystic fibrosis, which is a debilitating disease caused by mutations in the CFTR gene.

Researchers have long been puzzled as to how individuals who carry the same CFTR mutations can experience such different courses of disease. Patients with CF are affected in multiple organs such as the lungs, pancreas and liver, to varying degrees.

An international team led by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and the University for Toronto (U of T) has found a potential answer to this puzzle....
