Scotland sets minimum price for alcohol. Alcohol will be sold at a minimum price of 50 pence (81 US cents, 63 euro cents) per unit after lawmakers voted 86 to one in favour of the act. The measure could come into effect from next April.

"This policy will save lives -- it's as simple as that," Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said.

"It is time to turn the tide of alcohol misuse that for too long has been crippling our country," she added.

Studies in the elderly have linked excessive alcohol consumption to the cognitive decline and dementia.

A review paper by Kim JW et al published in iPsychiatry Investig/i 2012;9:8-16 on the association between alcohol consumption and cognition in the elderly provides an excellent summary of the potential ways in which alcohol may affect cognitive function and the risk of dementia, both adversely and favorably as alcohol may have both a neuro toxic and neuro protective effect, depending on the dose and drinking pattern....

Previous research has shown that prenatal exposure to alcohol often results in disruption to the brain's cognitive and behavioral domains.

A study of these domains in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), non-exposed children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and children without PAE or ADHD has found that, despite similarities in the relation between EF and adaptive abilities among children with ADHD or PAE, the patterns of abilities in these children were different....

"The main reason for the deaths is alcohol abuse," said Grygoriy Marchenko, the head of rescue forces at the Ukrainian emergencies ministry.
