Introduction to Noni

The scientific name of the noni tree is Morinda citrifolia L. It is a small and evergreen tree that primarily grows in the tropical regions of the world. It is also known as Indian Noni or Indian Mulberry. Noni has been identified as an important traditional plant used for medicinal purposes, that has been around for more than 2000 years in Polynesia. Morinda citrifolia is 3-10 m tall and forms bush. The appearance of noni fruit is oval and fleshy. Caproic and caprylic acids are primary organic acids whereas the main alkaloid is xeronine. Chemical composition varies depending on the part of the plant.

Noni fruit is made up of 90% of water and different types of soluble solids, dietary fibres and proteins. The protein content in the fruit is high and also contains essential amino acids including aspartic acid, glutamic acid and isoleucine. Some amount of selenium is also reported in the noni juice. Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is found in the fruit and provitamin A is also present in noni fruit. Studies conducted till date showed that the daily recommended oral dose of M. citrifolia is 2 g. A study reveals that drinking up to 750 ml of noni juice per day is safe.
