Indication Establish the presence of fungi, particularly candida sp, in immunosuppresed hosts.
Physiology Candida can be isolated in oropharyngeal cultures, stool cultures. Candida may become disseminated in patients with leukopenia, immunosuppressive therapy, AIDS, corticosteroid therapy, phagocytic defectts, hyperalimentation, use of broad spectrum antibiotic, oral contraceptives.
Normal Range No growth
Sample stool, rectal swab
Test Method culture on selective media
Related Tests fungus culture, Candida antigen, Methylene blue stain, Sputum fungus culture, stool culture.
