Anosmia / Loss Of Smell

About

RSS Feeds   Text
Anosmia is the inability to perceive smell. Most patients with anosmia complain of losing the sense of taste (ageusia) and of not enjoying food.

Anosmia is the inability to perceive smell. When the loss of smell is partial, the condition is called hyposmia. Some people are anosmic for one particular odor; this is called “specific anosmia”. Specific anosmia is usually genetically based. Most patients with anosmia complain of losing the sense of taste (ageusia) and of not enjoying food. They can perceive salty, sweet, sour, and bitter substances, but flavour discrimination which is a function of olfaction is not possible.

Anosmia / Loss of Smell

Smell is perceived by a special lining in the posterior portion of the nose called the olfactory epithelium. Signals are carried from this lining via nerves to the brain. Any factors that obstruct the smell from reaching this lining, or cause damage to it may cause anosmia.  Besides, damage to nerves that carry the signals or the part of the brain that perceives smell can also result in anosmia.

Anosmia may be part of normal aging. Respiratory infections, sinusitis, and head trauma are the most common causes of anosmia.

Diagnosis of anosmia is made by taking a detailed history, examining the patient and carrying out some tests.  Tests like CT scan and MRI may be required in cases when the cause is not clear. There are no treatments for anosmia itself though the specific causes may be treated.

Lost my sense of smell a year ago. Went from NO smell to horrible phantom smells. 3 different physicians said there was nothing that could be done. Went to an herbalist and a chiropractor. Having great success! No longer having phantom smells [sticky sweet peach, acetone, cat urine, and soggy burnt popcorn]. Can identify some smells now and most foods are starting to taste normal. For me, I am having success with the following supplements (Zinc, Adreno-lymph, Total Thyroid, B-12, Vitamin E, Blood Build, Coral Calcium, Ultimate Green Zone, and Proactazyme). Dr. J.D. Stanfield, Chiropractor in McPherson, Kansas did a lot of research to find supplements to support nerve growth and mucous lining. He also researched some special facial techniques that have been making a difference for me. I am thrilled to be tasting food again and actually smelling things like flowers, cilantro, cinnamon, and more.

I lost my sense of smell and taste about 7 years ago. It was very gradual and I realised something was wrong when i opened up a bottle of perfume. Eventually I did see Dr. Richard Doty at the University of Pennsylvania who confirmed that I had lost both senses. I had had an MRI and CAT Scan also. Dr. Doty came to the conclusion that my many sinus infections treated with anti-biotics, a bad case of the flue and pneumonia the following year - the latter treated with more anti-biotics were the probable causes. I have recetnly begun to read more on the condition and have seen the support groups. I agree, it is very debilitating. I lost interest in so many things and although people seem supportive, they really have no idea of the effect it has on one's life. I hate to complain about it as things could be much worse, but the longer it goes on, the worse I feel about it.

Hi, I am really interested in knowing if your smell came back. I also took mucinex in January for a bad cold and lost my sense of smell and taste. I am able to taste foods but to this date my smell is still poor. I am able to smell some things if i put it up close to my nose but I find that I cannot smell unpleasant odors at all. Please let me know if you have found a resolution.

I suffered a knock to the back of the head in 2005 and have had no sense of smell ever since. I can sometimes smell cherry, baby wipes, fish, petrol, and smoke. "markpeacock@hotmail.com". Thanks.

I lost my smell about eight years back after the use of an over the counter cold remedy, it came on [or off] so gradual I am still not sure as to the time my ability to smell disappeared. I am now having marital issues due to this condition, I have no sex drive any more and My poor wife is the one who is suffering the most. I am searching for support through the web to see how others have dealt with this condition .

I had a cold - not too severe and did not use any anti-biotics or cold medicines. But i used a homeopathy preparation 'alleraid' quite often first two days and then stopped after i discovered that i could not smell anything. It has happened before with anti-histamines but comes back. This time after day 5 still no smell and it's scary...I am Indian and the loss of spice in my life, literally, is quite unbearable. Would like Ms Salley to post any findings of her study to the group. thanks! Maha

iam dr kcsreddy suffering from total loss of smell since three months i was regular user of decongestants when ever i suffer from common cold.is the decongestants[otrvin, nasivion spray]caused the damage?

Im a healthy 40 year old female who is recovering from what I would describe as a prolonged cold [approx. 3 weeks]. Approximately 10 days ago, I noticed I was unable to smell, but didn't think much of it because I was still really congested. I used vicks vapor rub and otrivin for relief. I used the otrivin once per day for about 4 days. I was able to breathe better but still could not smell a thing. Went to doctor and was prescribed steroid nose spray (avamys) which I've been taking for almost a week. Brief whiffs of scent but that's it. No history of sinusitis/allergies. Very concerned as there appears to be no justification for the loss. Nose still runny and I continue to have a cough, but I am generally able to breathe and was hoping to be able to smell more by now.

I read that loss of olfaction may lead to the loss of libido.. Do you have this problem? Or is it just my case?

Posted by:  fastcargirl  Posted on: 05/02/2011
I have 100% smell loss and my libido is totally gone! It's awful!

Posted by:  Majka  Posted on: 05/30/2011
I cannot find more information about it.. Can somebody help us?

Posted by:  OhNose(Guest)  Posted on: 09/16/2011
I have completely lost my sense of smell for weeks. While I miss the smell of my husband's aftershave, it hasn't affected my libido. Maybe something else is going on. Good luck!

I am 54 and got shingles when I was 50 and in the last year just realized I can't smell. The shingles was on half of my head and face [effected my eye a little]. Would this have something to do with my smelling ability. Is there a test that can be done?

Hey All, From since i can remember i could never smell and i always had problems sleeping i was never refreshed or actually felt like i had a good nights sleep, at the age of 21 i started to have seizures and they found a mass in my right frontal lobe which happened to be a brain tumor. i had the tumor removed in August last year and now i can smell and i seem to be getting sleep and actually not feeling tired constantly. i think it is the best thing ever that we found the tumour because i just had enough of not being able to sleep and not feeling good :] im 22 and feeling great now :)
