They might give you an extra edge over others, but like everything else, your favourite trendy high heels come at a cost: your health.

According to a new research, sky heels are wrecking women's health - putting more than 20,000 a year in hospital.

Teetering around in several inches of heel not only hurts the feet, but causes accidents. More than a third of women have fallen while wearing them, the study found.

The rise in popularity of such footwear has been encouraged by celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Teens are among the worst hit - with under-18s about 50 times more likely to have hip trouble than their mothers, the study found.

Back pain is also up tenfold among young girls.

In the study, more than 1,000 girls were studied by shoe firm MBT.

Physiotherapist Joshua Wies warned many could face hip replacements.

"It is worrying under-18s are experiencing problems usually associated with OAPs," The Sun quoted him, as saying.
