Government Unveils Proposals to Reduce Teen Pregnancies in Wales
The proposals came in after data showed that teen pregnancies in the country were rising and remained higher than that of England. In 2004 the rate of teen pregnancies dropped to 7.5 per 1,000 girls aged 13 to 15, but shot up again in 2006-07 to 8.5 per 1,000 girls aged 13 to 15.
Health Minister Edwina Hart tabled the draft working paper Sexual Health and Wellbeing for Wales 2009-14 and said that emphasis would also be given to reduce sexually transmitted diseases.
"A key component of this new document is the importance of educating people of the need for a greater awareness of good sexual health and the dangers associated with unprotected sex," she said.
Sexual health organization the Terrence Higgins Trust Cymru welcomed the proposals and said it was high time this issue was tackled. The proposal will now go into a 16-week consultation period after which it will come into effect.
