Fat cells in the knee secrete a protein associated with rheumatoid arthritis, say researchers.

"We found that fat in the knee joints secretes a protein called pro-factor D which gives rise to another protein known as factor D that is linked to arthritis," said Nirmal Banda, Ph.D., associate professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. "Without factor D, mice cannot get rheumatoid arthritis."

Published April 21, the study involves an international research team that analyzed 2,816 JIA cases recruited from more than 40 pediatric rheumatology clinics. It was the largest collaborative patient population of JIA to date, including patient DNA samples from across the United States, Germany and United Kingdom, according to Susan Thompson, PhD, a researcher in the Division ...

When the team compared people who had never smoked, to women who had smoked for up to 25 years, they found that the risk also increased with length of smoking.

Stopping smoking did decrease chances of developing RA, with the risk continuing to decrease over time - 15 years after giving up the risk of RA had decreased by a third. However, compared to people who ...

However, new research published in the iJournal of Bone and Joint Surgery/i (iJBJS/i) found no difference in knee function, alignment or durability/survivorship between joints positioned and completed with the help of computer navigation, and those replaced with conventional total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures.

Lifestyle and environmental factors, such as smoking, diet, pregnancy and infection may cause the complicated disease, but a person's genetic make-up also influences their susceptibility.

Manchester University scientists believe they now know most of the disease-causing genes with the latest research identifying ones specific to the female X-chromosome.
