Contrary to what is believed, weight gain of 25-35 pounds (11-16Kgs) during pregnancy is a healthy sign. In cases of multiples (twins) the weight gain should ideally be 40-50pounds (18-22.5Kgs). Some important pointers about weight gain during pregnancy are:
*
The weight gain should be at a steady pace.
* Any sudden increase or weight loss should be reported to the gynecologist.
* Inadequate weight gain may have adverse effects on the baby.
* Sudden increase in the weight may be a warning of pre-eclampsia.
What is the need for weight gain?
The extra weight gain is needed to-
* Nourish the baby
* Have adequate reserves for breast feeding. It takes about 1000-1500calories to produce milk.
The baby’s health depends on the mother’s nutrition. Women with poor nutrition tend to have low birth weight babies who may require more hospitalization. It also increases the risk of neo-natal death.
